What do we talk about when we talk about freedom?
The stunning events of the past decade – September 11th, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and political and social transformation in the Middle East – compel each of us to contemplate our own interpretations of personal and public freedoms. In these instances, the meaning of freedom has been explored through a variety of lenses, including through cultural, economic, and political perspectives.
For each member of our human family, one’s understanding of freedom is represented through the unique symbols, stories, and traditions passed down through their native countries, religions, and family and friends. The Jewish vision of freedom arises from the experience of the Israelite slaves in Egypt, reenacted every year at the Passover seder. The Haggadah, which serves as the script for the Passover seder, invites improvisation around 15 actions and various ‘props’ to retell the story of the exodus of the Israelites from slavery to freedom.
Threatened by secularization in the wake of modernization, members of different religions are joining together to give strength and inspiration to one another, even if their practices, backgrounds, and beliefs differ. Comes to play, Blessed Are the Artists: Spirituality and Faith in Contemporary Art, an exhibit at Caldwell College bringing together 20 artists from diverse religious and ethnic backgrounds.

The Sexuality Spectrum is a groundbreaking exploration of diverse sexual orientations through the creativity of fifty international contemporary artists. The exhibition explores a broad range of subjects, including the evolving social and religious attitudes toward sexuality; issues of alienation, marginalization, and inclusion; the impact on the family, child-rearing, and life stages; violence and persecution; AIDS/HIV; and the influence of the LGBTQI community on the Jewish and larger world. This exhibition exemplifies the spirit of the College-Institute’s and the Reform Movement’s commitment to free and open inquiry, inclusivity and outreach, and advocacy on behalf of human rights and the eradication of sexual discrimination.
